Refracted Worlds

S.E.A-11.png

In Refracted Worlds, photography and digital art converge to create a space where reality bends, light dances, and perception is continuously redefined. This exhibition is a look into an immersive universe where the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds blur; where the lens of the camera and the precision of digital manipulation open doors to alternate dimensions. Through the innovative use of photography and digital artwork, Refracted Worlds explores the transformative power of light, the fracturing of perception, and the imaginative potential that lies in the spaces between what is seen and what is felt.

This exhibition is not merely a collection of images but an experience of the world through multiple lenses—each one a refracted fragment of a larger, complex whole. It asks us to consider how our understanding of reality is shaped by the tools we use to capture and interpret it, whether through the lens of a camera or the algorithms that generate our digital landscapes. The works presented here challenge the idea of a singular truth, offering instead a multitude of perspectives, each shifting, changing, and evolving.

The term "refraction" suggests the bending of light as it passes through different mediums. In this exhibition, it serves as a metaphor for the ways in which our perceptions are altered when viewed through the unique prisms of both traditional and digital media. Every image, every digital rendering, is an act of transformation—whether through the physical process of capturing a photograph or the virtual construction of new worlds through pixels, algorithms, and creative intervention.

We hope this online exhibition will allow you to look deeper, to see beyond the surface of things, and to embrace the fractured beauty of multiple realities. It is a reminder that the world around us is not a fixed entity but something malleable, something that can be reshaped through the lens of creativity and technology. As light bends and refracts through the prism of the artist’s vision, you are invited to step into a world where anything is possible—and everything is open to interpretation. Join us on this journey into the unknown, where the worlds we know give way to the worlds we can only imagine.

Digital collage on canvas

$3,000

Images in my Street Layers series are digital collages of photographs of graffiti and textures I find traveling across New York City. I pull images from different neighborhoods and even times, experimenting with how they meld together. On the surface, the titles appear to be plausible cross streets in New York neighborhoods. In reality, the titles represent new, liminal spaces that do not exist in physical reality. For me, these images represent the confluence of time and space. Preserving images of that which, by its nature, will be washed away, painted over, reconstructed, repaired, or torn down highlights the tension between holding on and letting go. Images in these layers break apart so they can come back together in new configurations. My work encapsulates the tension between preservation and the ephemeral, celebrating the beauty of decay and renewal.

I am a visual artist who works to traverse the convergence of the physical and digital worlds in my work. I am constantly curious about how human and other species' cultures approach life. I try to communicate complex emotions and concepts by creating digital environments based on my original photographs. My recurring theme is the exploration of how art can manifest our shared humanity and create a hopeful vision for its future, finding joy hiding in the smallest places.

Long have I dreamed about the inner workings of a city. What happens in the lives of all the individuals who travel through the different intersections? Do they move to their dreams or run from their fears? Whatever journey I find myself on I always know wherever I go, it was lit by the colors left behind by the travelers who came before me. This artwork was originally a photograph taken in New York City which was then rearranged into this convergence of lives.

The clothing that we present to the world represents our inner voice. So much can be told by how we present ourselves to others. Like a knight, our clothing is our armor. Helping us stand tall against the world and whatever kindness or madness it presents to us. We go into the world and with all at stake, not knowing who or what is watching. So of course we must come prepared.

Model: @Avery_ Miles_

I feel low watching my dreams tower miles above me. Debating who I am and who I want to be, I am afraid to sacrifice morals to summit such a peak. The heart that exists to propel me through this life will never let me begin that climb up those reptilian scaled walls. There has to be another way up.

Overdrive Official Car Mat, 2024
Digital Inkjet Print
40" x 30"
$2,500

I appropriate objects and images from shopping centers and waste to create surreal and satirical renditions of consumer and advertising landscapes. Using photography and digital 3D scanning methods, I create digital 3D models appropriated from advertisements, store displays, discarded surplus, microplastics, and single use packaging to display the ever-shortening life cycle of various consumer products, with most of my attention being turned to plastics. Drawing upon my lifelong involvement in- and exposure to- consumption, my practice reflects on how object attachment through nostalgia and environmental destruction are enmeshed in commodity capitalism. Objects that create memories and shape our experiences are the very same objects that will produce unknown environmental consequences far beyond our lifetimes. By researching the material properties of plastics as well as systems for the disposal of surplus products, my work examines the longevity of everyday objects, the production and promotion of even more objects, and their impact on both our memory and environment.

My works are visual sudoku’s, visual Rubik cubes. I organize shapes, puzzle with forms, lines, curves and colors until I find the ultimate, perfect design. The goal is to create visual tension between forms, to shape unique, exiting and striking objects. Inspired by mid-century art, I want the strength, the power, the playfulness of their works in my work. Their freshness and their honesty. It’s not ironic or sarcastic, it’s a glimpse of a more beautiful, better world.

As an abstract digital photographer, I reimagine my iPhone pictures of the flora and terrain that surround me. Using modern non-AI practices, I improvise with layering and filters to alter and heighten my subject matter. The result is a painterly and often hallucinatory explosion of color, shape, and texture, in a province where technology and nature intertwine to form an inviting tapestry. My quest is rooted in the vibrant scenery of my everyday life—working in a local retail nursery, surrounded by an ever-changing palette of flowers, while also living near shorelines, parks, and the remnants military bases. This abundant environment fuels my world of otherworldly blooms, bouquets, and landscapes. Using a combination of apps on my iPhone, I love to create photographs by merging images taken in entirely antithetical environments, as in the group I share today. To me, they intensify my already profound emotions regarding the state of life in today’s unsettling world.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, 2024
Photograph
20" x 16"
$650

Growing up in the vibrant chaos of New Orleans, I was constantly surrounded by the interplay of culture, history, and the built environment. This, combined with my South Asian heritage, created a vibrant, yet sometimes conflicting, sense of self. Though my memories of early childhood visits to India are fragmented, I've always felt a deep connection to my roots, nurtured by the constant presence of my extended family. However, the weight of distance and the passage of time often cast a shadow of "otherness" upon me. My recent return to India after nearly two decades was a whirlwind of emotions. I was there to celebrate my cousin's wedding, an occasion that should have been filled with pure joy. Yet, amidst the festivities, a poignant sense of displacement and a profound grief for the time that had slipped away began to surface. The vibrant colors, the intricate architecture, the familiar faces – all of them evoked a bittersweet nostalgia, a poignant reminder of missed opportunities and the weight of unspoken promises. This experience, deeply intertwined with my architectural background, profoundly impacted my perspective, leading me to explore how the built environment shapes our emotions and memories through my art.

My practice inhabits the liminal space where photography and digital art converge to create worlds where reality warps, light dances, and perception is continuously redefined. I explore how unseen computational forces shape our lived experiences, transforming mundane scenes into immersive universes where the boundaries between physical and digital blur. Through my work, I open doors to alternate dimensions that exist in the spaces between what is seen and what is felt.

In my "Reality Check" series, I digitally transform suburban streetscapes into thresholds where physical and digital realms converge. Each image reimagines familiar roads using various techniques (e.g., halftones, pixelated digital deconstruction, other abstractions and manipulations). For instance, “Reality Check II” subtly manipulates a basic neighborhood scene, inspired by childhood nostalgia and the imaginative possibilities that turn everyday spaces into portals to other worlds to capture the hidden layers and often-overlooked details of a familiar environment. By highlighting this fleeting moment, the piece invites viewers to pause and reflect on the beauty and complexity of the ordinary world. Meanwhile, “Reality Check III" fractures a familiar street scene through pixelation and stark contrasts between halftone elements and synthetic color. The car, rendered in low resolution, becomes a symbol of transition—moving through a world that exists simultaneously as physical infrastructure and digital data.

The acrylic block presentation adds crucial dimensionality, creating subtle reflections and refractions that echo how digital filters alter our perception. This tangible medium contradicts the ephemeral nature of digital manipulation, inviting viewers to physically engage with what typically exists only on screens. Each piece can be viewed from multiple angles, offering different interpretations—much like how our understanding of reality shifts depending on the technological frameworks through which we view it. In a complementary series, "Annotated Sunrise" overlays artist-generated AI annotations onto everyday scenes, transforming the mundane into sites of exploration. Labels, confidence scores, and bounding boxes highlight not only what the algorithm "sees" but also its inherent biases and limitations. The juxtaposition of a serene landscape with algorithmic overlays invites reflection on how these systems mediate our understanding of the world—what is revealed, misunderstood, and lost in translation.

Through these works, I examine the transformative power of light—both natural light captured by the camera and the metaphorical light of computation that illuminates certain aspects of reality while casting others into shadow. By making visible the often-invisible algorithmic gaze, I invite viewers to question how digital technologies reshape our relationship with the physical world and with each other, creating a space where the lens of the camera and the precision of digital manipulation reveal the imaginative potential that lies between worlds.
